Spain’s Supreme Court confirms Messi’s 21-month prison sentence for tax evasion

The Supreme Court of Spain, has confirmed Lionel Messi’s 21-month prison term for tax evasion, after he lost his appeal on Wednesday.

Messi and his father were charged with using tax havens in Uruguay and Belize and shell companies in the United Kingdom and Switzerland, to avoid paying taxes.

It is believed that the two men avoided paying €4.1 million(US$4.6 million) in taxes.

Besides serving seven months for each charge, the Barcelona superstar has also been fined more than €2million.

However, as the prison sentence is under two years, the Argentine will most likely be handed a suspended sentence.
