LYRICISM IS NOT DEAD. – UPCOMING ARTISTE, MAXXIEBOAY

LYRICISM IS NOT DEAD. - MAXXIEBOAY

Another episode of the UpComers_RYD_with Lexis_Will brought us up close to a budding dance hall artiste from Sefwi Wiawso, Maxwell Kofi Asare Addo. He goes by the stage name, MaxxieBoay and he’s an alumnus of KTI. This episode was hosted by YPa; he seems to be getting cosy in Lexis’ seat lately.
We set it off by pointing out the notion that Dance hall is usually linked to violence and drug abuse. To this, his response was, “I don’t do drugs. I’m a humble gangster”. Maxxie believes he is the game changer.
After he named Alkaline and Mavado as his main influence, the crew took some time out to soak in MaxxieBoay’s song “My Petition”. And that is when the real RYD begun. We noticed the honest lyrics in the song and asked him of what inspires him. “Music is life”, he shrugged, “You talk about what you see, what you’ve been through and where you want to go and it helps your career a lot”. We dragged it a little by citing the new wave of lazy song-writing and mumbling that seems to be the hot trend in music now. To this, he purported that, artistes like Patapaa who shot to the top via their sheer lack of lyrical prowess would not last so long in the spotlight and asked YPa, “Would you buy a Patapaa album?”.
YPa switched the topic at this point and asked about Maxxie’s relationship status. We got another surprise. “Single. To be honest. I have not dated before in my life… I [do] have female friends [but] I don’t think I am ready”. This made us remember BluePen’s recent comments about womanising being ‘part’ of show biz and we asked him what he thinks. “Maybe he doesn’t want to go far or he entered music because of that. I have aims in life and for my music”.
With rumours that some mainstream artistes either extort money from upcomers who would like to work with them or steal their song ideas, MaxxieBoay said, “It scares me a lot, so I… do things by my self. I know my time is around the corner”
Ending the interview, Maxxie sent out some advice to his fellow upcomers. “Be yourself and stop imitating those at the top else you’ll always be number two to them”
Our time with Maxxie brought us the hope that there are still young artistes out there who believe in a decent, down to earth lifestyle and are articulate about the lyrical content of their music. It is quite comforting to know that lyricism is not dead.
