Rapper Meek Mill Released From Prison
American rapper and ex boyfriend of Nicki Minaj, Meek Mill real name Robert Williams, was released from prison on Tuesday and he is thanking his fans for their support.
After a five-month-long ordeal of being unjustly imprisoned, Meek Mill is finally a free man and he shared a statement to mark the occasion. In November last year, Judge Genece Brinkley sentenced the Philly rapper to 2-4 years in prison for a probation violation which includes popping a wheelie on a motorcycle in the streets of New York and getting arrested in St. Louis. Both charges were dismissed and wiped clean off his records.
The sentencing sparked widespread outrage among fans and his celebrity peers who blast the judge and the justice system for treating minorities unfairly. Earlier this year, a major investigation was uncovered in Philadelphia which ousted a number of corrupt police officers including the one that arrested Meek Mill back in 2007 for weapons and drugs possession. Hundreds of inmates had their cases expunge, by Judge Brinkley wouldn’t budge despite the District Attorney and the Governor agreeing that Meek should be released from prison.
Seems the notoriously tough judge finally crack under pressure from the public and Meek Mill’s attorneys headed by Joe Tacopina. The rapper’s legal team filed a motion in February asking for the judge to release him from prison based on the corrupt police officer case. The judge set a hearing for two months in the future, while several other inmates in a similar situation to Meek were released last week Friday. That sparked even more outraged with some folks labeling the judge as vindictive and has personal problems with the rap star. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office even filed a petition last month telling the judge that they do not object to Meek Mill being released from prison.
“I’d like to thank God, my family, my friends, my attorneys, my team at Roc Nation including Jay Z, Desiree Perez, my good friend Michael Rubin, my fans, The Pennsylvania Supreme Court and all my public advocates for their love, support and encouragement during this difficult time,” Meek Mill wrote on Instagram. “While the past five months have been a nightmare, the prayers, visits, calls, letters and rallies have helped me stay positive. To the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice – not only for my case, but for others that have been wrongfully jailed due to police misconduct. Although I’m blessed to have the resources to fight this unjust situation, I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues. In the meantime, I plan to work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction and look forward to reuniting with my family and resuming my music career.”
