Russia Banned By FIFA And UEFA Until Further Notice

FIFA And UEFA Ban Russia And All Russian Clubs From World Soccer

Russian teams have been barred from club and international tournaments by FIFA and UEFA, as well as from competing in the 2022 World Cup and Women’s Euro.

Due to the ban, Russia will not be allowed to play Poland in a World Cup play-off semi-final next month, barring an implausible change of heart in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

UEFA has also ended its partnership with Gazprom, a Russian state-owned energy firm that is also a key sponsor of the Champions League.

The sponsorship agreement dates back to 2012 and is said to be valued roughly £33.4 million (€40 million) each season.

Which Fixtures Are Impacted?
On March 24th, Russia is scheduled to play Poland in a World Cup play-off match, but that match is now in jeopardy. If compelled to meet the Russians, the Polish FA has already announced that it would refuse to honor the game’s schedule.

Several other countries, notably Sweden and France, have spoken out against Russia’s continued participation in any global competition. FIFA’s ban affects all of Russia’s national teams, including their women’s squad, which is scheduled to compete in UEFA’s Euro 2022 tournament this summer in England.

FIFA and UEFA Statement
A joint FIFA and UEFA statement read: “Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.

“These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.

“Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.”
