Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Advocates Technological Advancements for Sustainable Supply Chains
The President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Mr. Mark Amoamah, has highlighted the critical role played by transportation and logistics in bolstering economic growth and trade facilitation. Speaking at the Annual General Meeting in Takoradi, he emphasise the need to embrace technological advancements for streamlining processes, enhancing efficiency, and reducing the carbon footprint within the industry.
Under the theme “Innovation and Sustainable Supply Chain and Transport Management: The Role of Technology and Legal Framework,” the event stressed the necessity for industry practitioners to adapt to the evolving landscape of supply chain management.
Addressing the challenges posed by globalization, climate change, and technological advancements, Mr. Amoamah stressed the importance of leveraging innovation for fostering sustainable practices within the sector.
He lauded the government’s initiatives outlined in the 2024 budget, particularly tax reliefs aimed at promoting the importation and assembly of electric vehicles. These measures not only relieve the private sector but also align with environmental goals, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases and the pursuit of net-zero carbon emissions.
However, to maximize the benefits of these reliefs, Mr. Amoamah urged the government to ensure an adequate infrastructure of charging points to sustain electric vehicle operations across the country.
Moreover, he emphasized the significance of ethical practices, social responsibility, and adherence to legal frameworks throughout the supply chain process. These practices encompass responsible sourcing, fair labor practices, environmental sustainability, and transparent business operations.
In a bid to address skill shortages in the sector, CILT Ghana signed a Memorandum of Agreement with GPHA to certify the competence of individuals in cargo handling equipment, enhancing the sector’s human resource capacity.
Additionally, Mr. Micheal Luguje, FCILT and the Director of Tema Port and the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, commended the Institute’s efforts in shaping the future of logistics and supply chain management. They emphasized the pivotal role of effective policies, technological advancements, and infrastructure improvement to foster a competitive global logistics and transport industry.
The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Mireku Duker, emphasized the importance of capacity building in ensuring safe transportation, health, safety, and environmental sustainability among industry members.
